Q: I have heard of the term barndominium as used for my horses and/or other purposes. What can you tell me about it?
A: In the 80’s the term barndominium was designed with the horse owner in mind.
The barndominium’s of today don’t necessarily hold horses, though they certainly are big enough.
They do provide open space both inside and out. They are generally large metal structures with high ceilings, open plan layouts and garages or workshop areas.
Basically, the goal would be as much square footage as you fit on the site, and people may well also want to build a home on the project itself.
Some builders are still advertising these types of structures for use by people who want large homes, land to raise chickens and grow vegetables and, generally, something in the rural areas to enjoy living with horses and/or other animals.
Just as in any other community situation, you need to be careful about how many units will be in the barndominium, if the developer has provided adequate protections for the operation of it, whether adequate restrictions are in place, and whether the developer has done a good job in constructing and designing the structure of the barndominium which will be beneficial to those who choose to buy into it.
