LEWISTON — The Town of Lewiston has another request for a traffic study, this one along the prominent Lower River Road.
The request from resident Janelle Tower wants a consistent speed limit for the road, with her letter to the town stating that the limit changes from 25 mph to 40 and 45 mph in different sections, with a 35 mph advisory for curves. She wrote that the current speed limit creates a dangerous environment, with residents using the neighboring pedestrian trails and nearby streets having lower speed limits.
“This inconsistency can be confusing for drivers and contributes to higher speeds being maintained inappropriately throughout our area,” the letter reads.
She also said there were instances of near collisions due to distracted drivers.
Tower has circulated a petition that has 28 signatures. The board did not take action at its meeting on Thursday as she is still gathering signatures.
Town Supervisor Steve Broderick said that Stella Niagara had also reached out about having a reduced speed school zone on Lower River Road.
As it is for state roads, speed limits for county roads like Lower River Road are set by the state Department of Transportation.
The town had received requests for other traffic studies, including one requesting a three-way stop for the Swann and Model City roads intersection and for Langdon Road, which had its limit lowered from 55 mph to 40 mph.
