Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks has declared Friday, Aug. 30, “Rep the ‘A’ Day” to coincide with the annual tradition of the Pep Rally on The Square for Athens High School.
In the official proclamation, which he delivered and signed to members of the school’s band and cheerleaders Friday, Aug. 23, Marks encouraged all residents of Athens to “proudly display” their Athens Golden Eagles colors and memorabilia on Aug. 30.
During the reading of the proclamation, Marks highlighted the impact of the annual event on the community, and how much that school spirit resonates throughout the city.
“Whereas, the Pep Rally on The Square showcases the classic southern character of Athens by bringing players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members and fans together in our historic Downtown Athens to celebrate the school spirit of our Golden Eagles,” Marks said. “And whereas, the cheerleaders are encouraging parents, community members, business owners — the whole City of Athens — to embrace the game-day theme.”
The Pep Rally on The Square has been going on for many decades, and it has always marked the first home game of each football season for Athens High School. The event is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Aug. 30, and all city school’s will experience early dismissal that day for all students to attend.
“This camaraderie pays tribute to a long-held tradition,” Marks said. “And shows support for (the) students, staff and our community.”
