The iconic Martin Luther King Jr. was remembered on Monday at 32nd Annual YWCA Greater Newburyport Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Breakfast.
The event, held at the Newburyport Community Senior Center, featured the theme of “Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence.”
Katrina “Kat” Hobbs Everett, M.Ed., was the keynote speaker. The “constructive deconstructionist, anti-racist, educator, entrepreneur, curator, activist, writer, and spoken word artist” serves as a city councilor in her hometown of Haverhill.
Poet Rhina P. Espaillat also spoke. Lawrence singers Jahmo Chavez — who recently earned his BFA in musical theater at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee — and Christian Cornelio — who is studying performing arts at Middlesex Community College — performe together. A blessing was given by Rabbi Alex Matthews, with a benediction from Reverend Rebecca Bryan.
The MC was Newburyport High School senior Molly Grant. Ghlee E. Woodworth was honored with the Nancy E. Peace ‘Action Against Prejudice’ Award.
