On Tuesday, Whitfield County Animal Control responded to a request from the sheriff’s office’s Court Services Division at the county courthouse concerning a raccoon that was curled up near the entrance. Animal Control captured the animal without incident.
Because of a concern regarding possible rabies, Animal Control personnel could not handle the animal directly. Therefore, Animal Control destroyed the animal and sent the remains to the Georgia public health laboratory for further testing in accordance with Georgia Department of Natural Resources protocol.
No report of contact with any persons with this animal has been made at this time. Should any person come into contact with a suspected rabid animal, do not approach it but rather contact 911 or Animal Control.
