In 1961, Hubbard transferred to the U.S. Army as a sergeant, and entered Army Artillery ROTC at Oregon State University. He received his commission and entered active duty in 1963.
His active-duty assignments included Vietnam with 1st Calvary Division (Airmobile); Korea 1st Battalion 81st Field Artillery; Germany with 3rd Battalion 81st Field Artillery & Headquarters, 5th Corps Artillery; and Korea with Headquarters, 1st (ROK/US) Corps Group.
Hubbard also had several additional temporary duty assignments overseas as chief, 155mm Artillery Office while assigned to the Army Armaments Material Command.
In 1980, Hubbard left active duty and continued his service in various capacities with the U.S. Army Reserves, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He retired from military service in 2000.
