PLATTSBURGH — The Adult Education Program of the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church hosts John Dominic Crossan on Thursday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Crossan’s topic, “The Execution of Jesus,” is a lead into Holy Week and explores: Why did Jesus go to Jerusalem that Passover? If he went regularly, what happened that final time that had never happened before? If he only went that final time, why then? Did he go to Jerusalem planning or at least presuming martyrdom as a vicarious atonement for sin and/or as a model of obedient suffering? If so, why did he survive so many days?
The image-based visual-lecture seeks to answer those questions not, as it were, be reading Jesus’ thoughts but by reading Jesus’ actions especially in Mark as the earliest of the four gospel-versions and the source of Matthew and Luke if not also of John.
John D. Crossan is generally acknowledged to be the premier historical Jesus scholar in the world. His books include “The Historical Jesus,” “Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography,” and “Who Killed Jesus?” He has appeared in the PBS special “From Jesus to Christ.”
