TRAVERSE CITY — Lincoln Lockhart doesn’t usually need motivation to have a good game, but he certainly had it Saturday.
The Traverse City West Senior guard scored 24 points in an overtime win over the school he would have attended had his family not moved to Traverse City when he was in fourth grade.
The Titans defeated Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern 65-61 on a Winslow Robinson key steal and bucket late to prevent a Huskies come-from-behind win.
The Titans saw a 15-point halftime lead evaporate in the second half, with FHN chipping away consistently until Cam Crowder’s 3-pointer with 1:20 remaining in regulation tied the game at 59.
That score would hold up for the last 1:20 and they’d go into a four-minute overtime that looked like it’d be up tempo from the start, with Forest Hills Northern’s Mo Dahabra and West’s Blake LaFaive trading buckets in the first 20 seconds. Then both defenses held serve over the next three minutes.
After a Titans miss, Northern had a chance to bleed the clock for one last shot, but Robinson didn’t let it get that far.
“I could see their guard kind of dribbling up, and he was kind of playing with it a little bit,” Lockhart said. “Winslow is very good at being decisive at where the ball is going to be. He picked it perfectly. That Rondo fake down there, when he got him, I was ecstatic for him.”
Winslow also turned the turnover into a transition bucket that gave West a 63-61 lead with 12 seconds left for his only points of the game.
“Coming out of that time out, we knew that we had the ability to be a little bit more aggressive,” West head coach Doug Baumann said. “We only had two fouls, so if we fouled them, they weren’t shooting. Just knowing how athletic Winslow is, how defensive-oriented he is, I said, ‘Just get after it if you have a chance.’ And he did, and as he always does.”
Mason Zimmerman forced another turnover on the next possession that turned into a Carter Grubb dunk just before the final horn.
Four of Forest Hills Northern’s players are on the same travel team Lockhart play for — the West Michigan Lakers.
“This was a big game for sure, big motivation for sure to win the game,” Lockhart said. “I had my AAU coach up here, some family friends, so it was a lot of added extra motivation to beat these guys.”
The Titans were a perfect 12-for-12 from the line, with Lockhart leading that charge with a 8-for-8 performance.
The game featured four technical fouls — two each per team.
Lockhart’s 224 points were on 7-for-11 shooting, and he added three assists.
Grubb pitched in 10 points and five rebounds, Blake LaFaive had 10 points, five assists and two steals, Zimmerman contributed seven points, six rebounds, three assists and two swipes and Caden Stoops scored eight.
Six-foot-7 center Joey Angok led the Huskies (5-9) with 21 points, while Crowder had 17 and Dahabra nine.
The Titans host Sault Ste. Marie next Wednesday before traveling to Cadillac that Friday.
