THOMPSONVILLE — Grace Slocum started the season as the only player to shoot under par at the Bob Lober Classic.
And won by a lot, as in 14 strokes.
Slocum shot a 2-under 141 for the tournament, with a 1-under 71 Wednesday on the Mountain Ridge course at Crystal Mountain Resort. She fired a 1-under 70 Tuesday on Betsie Valley.
Both days she closed out her round with a birdie on No. 18.
“Grace is playing at a whole different level,” Gladiators coach Craig Ardery said.
Second place was shared by the trio of Muskegon Mona Shores senior Mayson Southland, Grand Rapids Catholic Central junior Kelsey Preston and Farmington Hills Mercy senior Maeve Casey, all at 155.
Grand Rapids Catholic Central ran away with the Bob Lober Classic championship, winning the 24-team event by 26 shots. The Cougars shot 662 for the two-day event. Mercy was second with 685 and Brighton third at 709.
Petoskey finishes highest among area teams, taking 10th with a 778, followed by Cadillac (782, 11th), Traverse City Central (839, 16th) and Traverse City West (865, 18th).
St. Francis didn’t have a team score, as Slocum was the lone Gladiator to play both days of the tournament. The Glads play another round Thursday in Kalkaska at Grandview.
Petoskey was led by Riley Barr (179, 23rd), Emma Berg (194, 38th), Sara Hasse (200, 49th) and Brooke Philport (208, 54th).
Cadillac senior Samantha Vanbrocklin shot 170 to place 11th, two spots ahead of teammate Grace Drabik (171). Lillian Shankland shot 200 (49th).
Leading TC Central was junior Susie Hebert with a 189 (35th), with Rylee Ellison 38th, Hallie Cook 77th and freshman Maggie Gano 80th.
West was paced by senior Hannah Brown’s 204, placing 52nd, with Damien Gagno 56th, Addy Stark 70th and Sofia Hoag 79th in a field of 150 golfers.
