Athens improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2006 following a 39-14 win over Hazel Green on Friday night.
Xavier Edwards registered three touchdown runs for the Golden Eagles, while Damarcus Malone added two.
Brogan Gross, meanwhile, ran for a 2-point conversion and converted another on a toss to Aidan Lovell.
Defensively, Jeb Shinkunas and Alex Murphy combined for a safety. Jaxon Unger added an interception.
“I’m just glad it’s over,” said Athens coach Cody Gross, whose team led 39-7 at halftime. “We pulled some of the starters before the half and just happy to be 5-0 at the midway point.”
Athens travels to No. 6 Muscle Shoals next week for a crucial Class 6A, Region 7 clash.
“They’ve dominated this matchup in recent memory — we haven’t beaten them since I’ve been head coach,” Gross said. “Coach (Scott) Basden and that staff do a great job. They are sound and well-coached. You are going to have to beat them. We’ve got our hands full, but I really like this team. Looking forward to making the trip to Muscle Shoals next week.”
