HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Berkeley Post 14 scored six first-inning runs to defeat Potomac Valley Post 64, 7-2, in an Area 4 elimination game on Thursday at Hedgesville High.
Berkeley’s Trace Hough and Liam Healey started the bottom of the first with back-to-back doubles, and eight of the first nine hitters reached base safely during the big inning.
Landon Whitacre kept Post 64 in the game by throwing 5 2/3 frames of solid relief, allowing a run on five hits with four strikeouts to one walk, but Potomac Valley never got closer than four runs after the first.
Potomac Valley (5-16-1) was led by Oliver Crites at the plate, who went 3 for 3. Hunter Harr doubled, and Whitacre and Landon Tysinger singled twice each.
Cole Smith, Wyatt McClintock and Brayden Edwards had multiple hits for Berkeley.
Andrew Engle earned the win after scattering 10 hits to allow a run in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two. Braeden Oviedo threw 1 1/3 scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
