A Dalton man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after firing a gun during a domestic violence situation at an apartment Saturday night.
The Dalton Police Department arrested 29-year-old Mark Lee Sims with help from the Georgia State Patrol’s SWAT team after a standoff that lasted nearly two hours.
Police were sent to the apartment at 2250 Park Canyon Drive shortly after 7:20 p.m. following a report of gunfire. Initial information indicates Sims was in a physical domestic violence situation with a woman at the apartment, that Sims threatened the woman with a gun and fired at least one shot before she was able to escape.
The woman called 911 from a neighboring apartment. When officers arrived Sims was alone in the apartment and refused to come out. Because Sims was considered armed and barricaded, officers called for help from the Georgia State Patrol’s SWAT team, which arrived at approximately 8:20 p.m. After communicating with Sims, members of the SWAT team entered the apartment shortly after 9 and arrested Sims without incident.
More charges are possible.
