CHAMPLAIN — Everything was set up for Beekmantown.
The Northern Soccer League Division I champion was up 2-0 and had beaten Peru two times this season.
The Nighthawks made sure it wouldn’t be a third, defeating the Eagles, 3-2 in double overtime
“We talked about just who wants it more,” Reese Duprey said. “We haven’t been in this situation a lot, and we’re just been working so hard for this moment. I just couldn’t be prouder of these girls.
“We worked so hard in that second half, and we wanted it more, and it showed we got our passing down. Everything was better.”
Duprey scored the game winner with 7:42 remaining in the second overtime as she took a pass from teammate Chloe Campbell to get the game winner.
Teammate Maggie Garrow had a front row seat the the winner, which gave Peru it’s first sectional championship since 2021.
“I just was saying to myself, ‘Oh my gosh, please, please, please, just, please go in,” she said. “And I couldn’t control my emotions.”
A switch flipped in the second half as Peru wouldn’t give Beekmantown clear shots on net as they worked for opportunities to tie the game.
With 15 minutes gone in the second half, Bella Berry took a pass from Duprey to make it a one-score game.
Holding onto the lead, the Eagles were called for a foul in the box, giving the Nighthawks a penalty kick and chance to tie.
Garrow made the kick and the stage was set for the Nighthawks to complete the comeback.
Beekmantown took an early lead thanks to first half goals by Olivia Hagadorn and Olivia Miller.
After that Kori Lamoy and the Nighthawk defense locked down and kept the Eagle attack off balance.
“I think over the years, everyone’s not been worried about us,” Garrow said. “‘Oh don’t worry about this game. We’ll be fine.’ I think my team proved with hard work and dedication anything is possible.
“I think we’ll carry this into our next game and beyond.”
A full breakdown of the game will be Friday’s Press-Republican.
