At least one person was taken to the hospital as a blaze ripped through a home on Woodward Avenue near Essex Avenue on Saturday afternoon.
Fire Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at the waterfront property, at approximately 2:20 p.m., finding heavy fire and smoke showing from the building.
Gloucester firefighters continue to battle the blaze at the two-story home from the outside, taking a defensive approach, with the fire now under control around 5 p.m.
Beauport Ambulance transported one person from the scene to Addison Gilbert Hospital.
The Gloucester Fire Department is asking community members to avoid the area as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.
Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Engine 6, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, Rescue 2 and C3 responded to the scene.
Mutual aid is being provided by fire departments in neighboring communities.
