One man was sentenced to prison for the murder of a Mankatoan in Minneapolis in May, while another man accused of the offense had his murder charge dismissed.
Barkat Abdi Nour, 25, of Blaine, was convicted on a felony second-degree murder charge Friday in Hennepin County District Court related to the death of Abdirizak Mahamed Abader, 27, of Mankato.
Nour reportedly fatally shot Abader in an alleyway on May 16 following an argument.
A sentencing order calls for a 12-year, six-month sentence for Nour, minus 257 days credited to him for time already served. About two-thirds of the sentence will be served in prison.
Nour had a Norgaard plea accepted, meaning he asserted he didn’t recall what happened while acknowledging there was enough evidence to convict him. He was ordered to pay $6,900 in restitution.
The other man reportedly at the scene, Adnan Hassanur Ismael, 20, had his murder charge dismissed Friday after a newly obtained statement from him resulted in there no longer being probable cause for the charge, according to court records.
His public defender argued for the charge to be dismissed in September. The sole evidence used to charge Ismael was that he was in the alley around the time of the shooting, his attorney stated in court records, with the state not alleging he was in possession of a gun or was the shooter in the case.
The court filing notes Nour was also in the alley around that time and was also possibly in possession of a gun in his waistband at the time. Afterward surveillance footage reportedly showed Nour holding an object in his waistband, with what appeared to be the barrel of a gun hidden underneath his clothing.
