MALONE — Union officials confirmed that on Wednesday multiple correction officers and staff were recently treated at a hospital after being exposed to an unknown substance at Upstate Correctional Facility.
Approximately a dozen staff became lightheaded, dizzy, and nauseous after interacting with an inmate who was involved in an altercation with another inmate at the Malone prison, according to an email from James Miller, director of public relations with the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association.
Miller said Narcan was administered to a few staff members to assist them with the symptoms and they were later transported to a local hospital.
The symptoms are believed to have been caused by a synthetic substance.
“We believe at this point it was an exposure to some type of synthetic drug, but it is unclear at this time the exact drug,” Miller said in the email.
No additional information was available as to the condition of the prison officers or staff.
