TICONDEROGA — It was a game neither team wanted to lose, and left everything on the field.
Peru held a 27-14 lead early in the third quarter, only for Woodstock to answer with two scores to take a 28-27 lead.
The Nighthawks and Wasps traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with Peru failing a two-point conversion to push their lead to seven. Woodstock scored with four minutes to go to take a 35-33 lead, which would be the final score.
While the game was a back-and-forth game with both teams trading the lead multiple times, it had the Week 0 feelings of mistakes that can doom a team. That’s what happened to the Nighthawks.
Sawyer Schlitt again showed he’s a force to be reckoned with as he combined for 379 all-purpose yards, 280 coming on the ground. He combined to score all of the Nighthawks touchdowns, three on the ground and two through the air.
Peru combined for 309 yards on 34 carries, easily outrushing the Wasps that had 32 for 163.
Jake Frechette finished the night 11-21 for 180 yards.
Penalties were the culprit as drives were extended or halted often at the expense of Peru. The Nighthawks will have time to work on the mistakes as they have a week off before returning to action. They next play on Sept. 20, when they travel to face Plattsburgh.

INDIAN RIVER 42
BEEKMANTOWN 15
INDIAN RIVER — Trevor Shawcross will be a name the Eagles will be glad to not see again for the rest of the season.
The Wolves’ running back accounted for three touchdowns and 195 yards, as Indian River roared to a 34-0 lead before Beekmantown got on the scoreboard.
The Eagles would fall to the Wolves, 42-15.
Beekmantown had bright spots as Parker Broughton carried the ball for 94 of the team’s 129 yards. Broughton also recorded both touchdowns for the Eagles, including running in for a two-point conversion.
As with the rest of Section VII, Beekmantown was working in numerous new players as they lost a nucleus of players to graduation. The Eagles now have an idea of what to work on as they prepare for CVAC play Friday.
Indian River had plays of 74, 75 and 29 yard touchdowns in the first half. Busanet opened the scoring with a first quarter 74 yard scamper in the first quarter. He finished with 109 yards on 14 carries.
Shawcross, however, did most of the damage. He finished with 195 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns. Busanet had two.
Beekmantown opens up at home Friday, when they host Saranac. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
