ACCIDENT — Jacob Brown caught fire in the third quarter, helping top-ranked Southern pull away from rival Northern, 66-50, on Friday night.
Southern (6-4, 3-0 Western Maryland Athletic Conference) led 17-10 after a quarter and 30-24 at the half, but it pulled away thanks to 13 points from Brown during a 23-point third period for a 53-38 lead.
Brown finished with 26 points to tie a game high with Northern’s Jayden McNally.
Graham Harvey added 15 points for the Rams, Braden Lucas scored nine and Alec Van Scheetz chipped in eight.
Southern is at Broadfording on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Northern (5-5, 0-3 WestMAC) is at Mountain Ridge (4-3, 0-1 WestMAC) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
No. 5 Petersburg 82, Philip Barbour 49
PHILIPPI, W.Va. — Kaleb Kuhn exploded for 30 points, and No. 5 Petersburg romped Philip Barbour Friday to push its winning streak to five games.
Petersburg (6-1) tallied 27 points in the second quarter to turn a tie game at 17 after a period into a 44-24 halftime rout. The Vikings led 63-40 going into the fourth.
Kuhn was joined in double figures by Caden Ours and Payton Metheny, who both scored 19 points.
Patrick Webster led Philip Barbour with 18 points.
Petersburg hosts Hampshire on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Union 50, Valley 33
PINE GROVE, W.Va. — Union earned its first win of the season, defeating Valley on the road Friday.
Braylon Ward and Eric Linkswiler each scored 23 points for the Tigers (1-6).
Ward scored 12 points in the first half while Linkswiler added 14 in the second half.
Koleton Kinkade led the Lumberjacks (1-8) with 12 points.
Union led 15-4, 23-19 and 39-26 through three frames.
The Tigers head to Highland on Monday at 7 p.m.
