ACCIDENT — It wasn’t pretty, but No. 1 Northern bounced back from dropping the first set to win 3-1 over Mountain Ridge on Thursday.
The Miners (5-8, 3-3 Western Maryland Athletic Conference) won the first set 25-21 before the Huskies (12-0, 7-0 WestMAC) swept the final three sets 26-16, 25-19 and 25-18.
“Oh lord, my blood pressure was up tonight!” Northern head coach Jamie Bailey said. “The girls got some cursive words tonight. They went in cold and dropped the first set. After a good come to Jesus speech early in the second, they perked up a little.”
Demi Ross finished with four aces, 15 kills, an assist and two digs for the Huskies.
Marisa Perez recorded 36 assists with one ace, two kills and four digs while Violet Taylor had 22 digs and eight aces.
Aubreigh Wilson finished with a double-double for Mountain Ridge, posting 14 assists, 10 points, four aces, two kills and six digs.
Kealana Pua’auli recorded nine points, one ace, one assist, 13 kills and nine digs.
Kayden Wilson added nine points with an ace and five digs.
Lainey Clark had one point, one ace, one assist, four kills and 12 digs.
Destinee Johnson contributed four digs and five blocks.
“Mountain Ridge’s middle hitter improved her block and shut down my hitters,” Bailey said of Johnson. “We had to adjust to get around her. We also had to play keep away from Macy Barth again.”
Northern took the junior varsity game 25-20 and 25-11 led by Mazzy Morel’s two kills, nine assists and five digs while London Champlin had two aces and 12 digs.
Marissa Ziler had four points for Mountain Ridge.
Both teams hit the road on Monday.
The Miners head to No. 4 Allegany (6-7, 1-6 WestMAC) at 7 p.m. while the Huskies face Frankfort (6-21) at 7:15 p.m.
