NEWBURYPORT — The city’s number of new police officers increased by two last Friday after James DeGloria and Cameron Richmond graduated from the Municipal Police Training Committee Police Academy 5th ROC (recruit officer class) last Friday at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill.
Among those on hand for the ceremony were Mayor Sean Reardon, City Marshal Mark Murray and Lt. Matthew Simons.
DeGloria and Richmond spent almost six months at the police academy attending academic, physical, and practical training sessions each day. Some areas of training included criminal law, constitutional law, motor vehicle law, defensive tactics, de-escalation techniques, effective communication, emergency vehicle operation, patrol procedures, CPR/first-aid, firearms training, and wellness training, according to a statement from the Newburyport Police Department.
At graduation, Richmond received and academic award of excellence from maintaining the highest academic grade average in the recruit class. Both officers are now academy trained, certified and ready to begin field training. Both officers must complete an extensive field training program prior to being assigned to a permanent shift.
