NEWBURYPORT — A local police officer was transported to an area hospital by an Atlantic Ambulance crew around 11:15 a.m. Monday after being involved in a crash with a car in the area of 6 Plum Island Turnpike, according to police officials.
The officer, who was not named by police, sustained a leg injury, according to a witness at the scene.
A preliminary investigation determined that the officer was attempting to stop a motor vehicle on the turnpike and was driving with lights and sirens on when the crash occurred.
The officer was treated for non life-threatening injuries at the scene by EMTs from Atlantic Ambulance, Newbury Fire Department and Newburyport Fire Department before being driven to the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation by supervisors within the Newburyport Police Department, which is standard procedure for any crash involving a police vehicle.
