NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Choral Society will begin its spring semester of weekly rehearsals on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7:15 p.m. at Belleville Congregational Church, 300 High St. Online preregistration for singers is open at www.newburyportchoralsociety.org.
Join now to sing selections from Felix Mendelssohn’s dramatic oratorio “Elijah” and a newly published choral work of his older sister, Fanny Mendelssohn, in concert on Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 42 Green St.
“This season, under the direction of conductor Dr. Minji Kim, promises to be fascinating and rewarding, sure to end with appreciative ovations and lasting memories,” said NCS Membership Director, Penny Lazarus.
NCS was set to perform “Elijah” in spring 2020 when COVID-19 shut down choral rehearsals and concerts for the following two years. NCS choristers have been hoping to return to this monumental piece, and this year offers the opportunity to do so. “Elijah” is a majestic story of faith and hope, with four soloists, full orchestra and a large chorus, according to organizers.
The first two rehearsals, on Tuesday, Jan. 13, and Tuesday, Jan. 20, are open and free of charge to anyone who would like to visit the chorus before making a commitment to join. All voice parts are welcome. New singers should register online by filling out the form on the NCS website: www.newburyportchoralsociety.org/join-us. Online preregistration is required so that singers may borrow music scores. First-time singers should arrive by 7 p.m. to sign in and obtain music.
