LONDONDERRY — New Balance Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to the Londonderry Trailways to support Phase 7 of the Rail Trail project during a presentation at the North School trailhead on Aug. 6.
The donation will help advance the undeveloped segment of rail corridor that connects Londonderry to Derry into a rail trail, strengthening outdoor access and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
The Londonderry Rail Trail is a community trail project that provides a shared outdoor space for walking, biking, and other nonmotorized activities. The 4.5-mile trail will continue to grow in phases to its full 6 miles as resources are secured.
Londonderry’s Rail Trail will connect to Derry, Windham and Salem’s rail trails at 15 miles in length when completed.
New Balance recently opened an athletic footwear factory in town, adding New Hampshire to Maine and Massachusetts where the company owns and operates manufacturing facilities in New England.
“This grant from the New Balance Foundation is a tremendous boost for our community,” said Vice President of Londonderry Trailways Sandra Lagueux.
Londonderry Trailways is a community organization dedicated to planning and developing the Londonderry Rail Trail for public use. Through partnerships and community support, Londonderry Trailways works to expand access to safe, enjoyable recreational opportunities.
“These funds will help us continue to build on the safe, user-friendly space of our rail trail for walking, running, biking, and enjoying the outdoors” Trailways President Bob Rimol added.
Londonderry Trailways, together with the town, will use the grant, along with funds from a voter approved warrant article, and an awarded federal grant, to support Phase 7 of the Londonderry Rail Trail. Phase 7 is the long-awaited segment that will connect Londonderry’s Rail Trail to Derry benefiting people of all ages and abilities.
“The New Balance Foundation’s mission is to invest in vibrant communities and bright futures through sport. We’re committed to supporting the well-being of children and families by expanding access to spaces that help people thrive,” Senior Grants Manager of New Balance Foundation Jessica Pelletier said.
“The Londonderry Rail Trail is an important community asset that encourages outdoor recreation, connection, and exploration. We are proud to support this project and invest in a community where our New Balance associates live and work, helping create a lasting resource that will benefit residents and visitors of all ages for years to come.”
