The season may be over for the Endicott College men’s basketball team, but the awards continue to roll in for Marcus Montagnino.
Already dubbed the Conference of New England’s (CNE) Player of the Year, Montagnino was recently named to the National Association of Basketball (NABC) All-District II First Team. In addition, he was honored as a D3hoops.com All-Region II First-Team selection, with both organizations announcing those lists on Tuesday afternoon.
Montagnino, a Gloucester native, was accompanied by Suffolk’s Keenan Robertson and Western New England’s Tim Restall as the only CNE representatives on the teams.
To cap things off, on Wednesday Montagnino became the first student-athlete in Endicott men’s basketball program history to land on an NABC All-American team, earning Third Team status.
Relating to the former two awards, District II consists of teams from the CNE, the Little East Conference (LEC), New England Women’s and Men’s Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) and the University Athletic Association (UAA). For D3hoops.com, Region II consists of teams from just CNE, LEC and NEWMAC.
In earning the D3hoops.com accolade, Montagnino becomes just the fifth Gull to be bestowed the honor, joining Jalen Echevarria (2024), Keith Brown (‘20), Kamahl Walker (‘17) and Lance Greene (‘13). He is also just the third student-athlete in program history to be named to an NABC All-District team, joining Walker and Brown.
A graduate student transfer from Xavier University, where he played club basketball, Montagnino held impressive averages of 22.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.1 steals in just over 33 minutes per game for the Gulls in his debut campaign. He connected on a remarkable 59.4 percent of his shots from the field, 44.8 percent from 3-point land and 80.8 percent from the free throw line, all top four marks in the CNE.
His points per game average ranked 17th nationally.
Among his other accomplishments, Montagnino became the first Endicott player to record a regulation triple-double, going off for 33 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds against Hartford. He helped Endicott to an 18-win season, an 11-game winning streak and the No. 2 seed in the CNE tournament.
