SLEEPY EYE — The Brown County Sheriff’s Office reported minor injuries after a semi vs. train collision in Sleepy Eye Friday, according to a news release.
The sheriff’s office received multiple reports of the incident at 24170 U.S. Highway 14 at around 2:13 p.m. Friday.
Robert Thomas Jewett, 24 of New Richland, was driving a 1996 International Harvester semi tractor-trailer combination westbound on Highway 14 and attempting to turn into a business at the site of the incident when it was struck by the train.
Jeffrey Alan Schafer, 56 of Madison Lake, and Thomas Herman Behsman, 57 of Madison Lake, occupied the train, a Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad train.
The occupants were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The semi tractor and train were damaged and a Wilson grain trailer was totaled.
The Sleepy Eye Ambulance, the Sleepy Eye Fire Department, the Minnesota State Patrol and Brown County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the call.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office shared the following safety tips for drivers:
Slow down when approaching a railroad crossing.Stop and listen at the railroad crossing.Stay back when necessary.Have patience.Look both ways before crossing.Do not stop on the train tracks.Never drive under or around the gates or past the lights (if flashing.)Wait until the gates are completely raised and the lights have stopped flashing before crossing.
