NEWBURYPORT — Middle Street Foods will feature Cynthia Kowal as the featured artist in September.
Her show “Garden Paintings” is based on her activity in a community garden. The show includes a mix of scenes and portraits of gardeners at work. The flyer painting, “Garden 2025: Brussels,” captures a scene of Brussel sprouts growing in 5-gallon buckets with a distant view of the larger garden. Her work conveys expression, focus, place and season.
The paintings can be seen during open business hours, Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Middle Street Foods is at 25 Middle St. It will be closed Sept. 6-14.
Kowal retired from a professional career as a research administrator in fall 2022.
Generally, her artwork reflects her appreciation of the natural world, workplace experiences, and enjoyment of living in Newburyport. Her painting “Yellow House, Water Street” appears as a mural image on the Clipper City Rail Trail near Joppa Park.
