Two memorial services are planned Friday to honor the fallen heroes who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks 25 years ago.
The Cumberland County Fire Department invites the public to its ceremony at 7:30 a.m. at the 9/11 memorial at 1391 Livingston Road, Crossville. The memorial is beside the main fire station headquarters.
In Fairfield Glade, the community’s first responders will host a memorial ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Veterans and First Responders Memorial at Robinhood Park. The park is at Peavine Road and Snead Drive.
Both ceremonies will memorialize the almost 3,000 people who lost their lives when four airline jets were hijacked. Hijackers crashed the passenger-filled jets into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and a field in Shanksville, PA.
Among those losing their lives were 246 passengers and crew members of all four jets, 125 military personnel and civilians at the Pentagon, 2,606 people at the World Trade Center, including 343 members of the Fire Department of New York, 23 New York Police Department officers, 37 Port Authority officers, eight paramedics and EMTs, and one Fire Patrol member.
