Not many skiers performed better than Manchester Essex’s Quinn McLain at Tuesday’s state championships.
Competing in the MIAA alpine championships at Berkshire East, McLain represented the Hornets proudly by securing a 12th place finish (out of 143 total competitors) in the slalom race. His time of 46.65 seconds was less than three seconds behind champion Theo Remington of Concord-Carlisle, and just 10ths of a second out of a top 10 finish.
On the girls side, fellow Hornets standout Gracelyn O’Neill made her mark in the giant slalom race. Her time of 1:00.94 landed her in 72nd overall out of 147 individuals.
It was a competition pitting the best of the best against one another in high school skiing, and Manchester Essex’s top duo certainly delivered.
From a team perspective, Mohawk Trail Regional took home the girls title, followed by Newton South and Medway. St. John’s Prep reclaimed the boys title by edging out runner-up Concord-Carlisle and third place Needham.
