NEWTON — Camryn Martin was all smiles after her team’s win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg on Thursday at Newton High School.
Not only did her Newton Lady Eagles win convincingly, but she reached a milestone during the first half of the contest. Martin eclipsed 1,000 points for her career with 4:44 left in the second period. She got to the mark by hitting a midrange shot.
“1,000 points means a lot to me. I’ve worked very hard to get to 1,000 points,” Martin said. “My teammates have helped me a lot and I’m just very grateful and blessed to have reached this goal that I’ve always wanted to reach.
“I was very relieved when I hit that shot.”
“We knew coming in that she needed 10 points to reach 1,000,” head coach Brad Harris added. “She’s worked so hard the four years she’s been here. She came in freshman year and jumped right in. First game of her high school career, she led us in the junior varsity and then turned around and led us in scoring in the varsity on the same night. That was her introduction to high school basketball and she’s been on the go since then.
“The work she puts in and the determination she has. She has scorers to go with her this year, too, so shots don’t come as quick as they do, but she makes them count when she gets them.”
Martin finished with 19 points, 10 assists, and six steals.
Sister, Karasyn, had a game-high 20 points. She added four assists and five steals.

Newton (2-0) led 21-2 after the first quarter, 38-11 at halftime, and 57-31 at the end of the third. The Lady Eagles outscored the Hatchets 12-7 in the fourth.
“We’ve really focused on defense, trying to slow teams down and take them out of their rhythm,” Harris said. “We got that zone, but we try to get a lot of pressure out of it. We have a lot of length and speed and try to use that to our advantage.”
Ellie Wittenberg led WSS (1-1) with 14 points. Kendra Hayes had nine. Katelyn VonBehrens had eight. Claire Holland had three, and Clarissa Johnson and Claire VonBehrens each had two.
