CUMBERLAND — A man metal detecting in a wooded area in the 300 block of Independence Street Tuesday found possible human remains, Cumberland Police said.
Chief Chuck Ternent said officers were called to the area about 1 p.m. to investigate what was described as a “suspicious incident.”
“Officers searched the area and found scattered bones that may be of human origin,” Ternent said in a release Tuesday evening.
Evidence collection and investigation by detectives from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit and members of the Maryland State Police Crime Lab continued late Tuesday.
“Once evidence collection is complete, the bones will be transported to the Office of the Maryland Chief Medical Examiner for scientific analysis,” Ternent said, adding the investigation is in its early stages and no further information is available regarding the origin of the bones or the circumstances surrounding them.
