Round 2 is in the books at the 2024 Joseph F. Healey Memorial Championship, and to the surprise of few, defending champion Nick Maccario has surged to the front.
Dominating the competition on Saturday at a pristine Atkinson Resort and Country Club, Maccario carded a 3-under par 69, to move to four-under through 36 holes. Maccario will take a two-shot advantage into Sunday’s championship round at Haverhill Country Club over first-round leader Anthony Gallardo.
The former UMass Lowell star Gallardo, who blistered Crystal Lake GC on Friday with a 65, fired a 76 on Saturday and is now -2 for the event.
How good was Maccario on Saturday? Not only was he the only player in the field to break par, his score was six shots better than the next closest competitor – James Robbins and Matt Lucy each shot 75.
Maccario birdied the first and second, kicking things right into gear, that added a pair of birdies, 13 pars and a bogey the rest of the way.
He and Gallardo will tee it up with senior division leader Bill Drohen (+2, six shots off the lead) in the final group of the day on Sunday at Haverhill CC. They hit the course at 12:15 p.m.
In all, 41 players made the cut of +20.
