WRESTLING
Gloucester strong at Mt. Hope tourney: Competing at the Sharon Lombardo Mt. Hope Tournament in Bristol, RI, the Fishermen secured a solid fourth place team finish. Aiden DeCoste continued to wrestle well, taking home a victory at 132 pounds, while Max Thomas did the same by winning his weight class at 215. Joe Allen (157 lbs.), JJ Figueroa-Mercado (165) and Zach Hashley (190) all claimed third place medals. Quadir Divens and Jeremiah Bushfield added fourth place finishes while Anthony Murawski took fifth. Additionally, Cam Russell won his first varsity match at 138 pounds.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Gloucester 5, Beverly 4 (OT): Elliana Parsons netted the game-winner in overtime to send the Fishermen (2-1) to a thrilling victory on Saturday afternoon. Keagan Jewell continued her stellar play to begin the year as well, netting a hat trick in the win, while Melanie Earl had the other goal to go with one helper. Other assists went to Kaya Collins, Fiona Black and Parsons.
BOYS HOCKEY
Woburn 7, Gloucester 1: The Fishermen (2-1) dropped their first game of the season against Division 2 powerhouse Woburn despite a valiant effort in net from sophomore goalie Trey Marrone (33 saves). Senior captain Giacamo Martell had the lone goal on assists from fellow captains Cade Cooper and Chris Dailey. Gloucester managed 21 shots on the evening.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Rockport 62, Pentucket 49: The Vikings (1-2) snagged their first win of the season in their home gym behind a balanced offensive attack. Josiah Whitley led the way with 16 points while Ansh Kataria had 15 and Chase Wheat 14. Pat Reardon added six points and as a whole, Rockport’s defense consistently came through.
“Our defensive intensity was awesome and we were able to get them out of their rhythm and off their spots,” said Rockport head coach Phil Whitley. “Great team win.”
Rockport will host Academy of Notre Dame on Monday at 4 p.m. with a chance to even their record before an extended layoff for the holidays.
Manchester Essex splits pair: On Friday night, the Hornets rallied for a down-to-the-wire, 43-42 conference win over North Reading thanks to two huge free throws from senior captain Milo Zeltzer with one second left in regulation. Then on Sunday afternoon, Manchester (2-1) suffered its first loss of the young season, 64-55, to Holland Tech (formerly known as Burke), despite 20 points from sophomore guard Graham Lewis.
Masconomet 60, Gloucester 52: The Fishermen came up short in a competitive Northeastern Conference battle on Friday night. Charlie Amero and Carlos Velazquez had 16 and 14 points respectably.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Rockport 42, Notre Dame Cristo Rey 19: Senior captain Allie George led a balanced Vikings attack by scoring 21 points to help her team improve to 2-1 on the season. Rockport is back in action Monday night at Gloucester for a 6 p.m. tip off.
Masconomet 69, Gloucester 45: Fishermen junior forward Jordan Purdue Del Torchio (18 points) continued her strong play, but it wasn’t enough against a talented Masco squad. Senior captain Taiya Mano also performed well, adding 16 points with four triples, while sophomore Olivia Madruga chipped in with six points. Gloucester will host Rockport Monday night (6 p.m.).
SWIMMING
Masconomet 91, Gloucester 77: The Fishermen suffered a competitive loss despite several standout performances. Henry Siedzik captured first place in the 200 IM to lead the charge in defeat. In addition, the 200 freestyle relay team of Susie Low, Jacob Anktell, Amos Telep and Sean Buckley took first place, securing a strong finish for Gloucester in the relay event.
“Great effort from all swimmers as they continue to push toward future meets,” said Gloucester coach Laura Dale.
