This Triton golf team continues to prove that it’ll be a factor at the upcoming Division 3 North Sectional tournament.
Oh yeah, and don’t forget at the annual “River Rival” meet, too.
But on Wednesday afternoon, Triton took the trip over to Black Swan Golf Club and took down host Georgetown, 179-108. It was the sixth straight victory for the surging Vikings (8-1), who with it increased their season-long match scoring average to an impressive 169.1 points. Evan Allen came to the clubhouse with a meet-high 36 quota points, while Cullen Kohan was at 32 and Noah Collins carded 28.
Then for Georgetown (0-9), Maverick Crosby had a team-high 21 points and fellow junior Nathan Anderton had 20.
First loss for Port volley comes against top-5 D2 foe
Well, the pressure of being undefeated has now been lifted.
And even in defeat, some great lessons were picked up.
Coming into Wednesday’s match, Newburyport volleyball coach Lori Solazzo knew that visiting Melrose was going to provide one of the toughest tests her team had seen this fall. On paper, the Clippers came into the night as the newly-minted No. 1-ranked team in the initial MIAA Division 3 power poll, while the Red Hawks were at No. 3 in Division 2.
And the marquee matchup lived up to the hype.
Melrose was able to hand Newburyport its first loss of the season, rebounding from dropping the first set to take the next three for the 3-1 win (23-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-22). Both programs have legitimate state championship aspirations this year, but on this particular night, the Red Hawks (7-2) were just a little bit better.
Meanwhile for the home team, Gabby Vigeant led the way with 11 kills and 4 aces, while Lilah Thompson sent down 5 kills. The Clippers (9-1) now get the rest of the week off before hosting North Reading on Monday.
Rennick scores again for Triton field hockey
Just keep stacking positive results, and everything will fall into place.
That’s been the motto for the Triton field hockey team for basically the past two weeks, and that’s why it found itself inside of the Division 4 playoff field in the initial MIAA power rankings at No. 30. And that positive trend only continued on Wednesday afternoon, as the Vikings welcomed in Saugus and came away with a 1-1 draw.
After a monster 2-goal, 3-assist performance against Amesbury last week, Daily News All-Star forward Maggie Rennick found the back of the cage once again during the tie. The Vikings (2-4-1) remain unbeatan over their last three games, and will look to keep it rolling at Haverhill on Friday.
Pentucket golf drops non-league match
For a young team, it’s probably better to get used to future rules now.
On Wednesday, the Pentucket golf team traveled for a non-league match at crosstown rival Haverhill, and played pure stroke play in a 249-271 loss at Bradford Country Club. It was recently announced by the MIAA that starting next year, all leagues in the state will operate under stroke play rules.
Logan Artus was the low man for the Panthers (0-10) during the setback, firing a 41.
