It was easy to see the potential a year ago.
When you watched the Newburyport field hockey team play last fall, especially towards the end of the season, you could tell that then-freshman Kendall Martyn was already standing out and was going to be great. The promise was high for the midfielder heading into her sophomore season, and so far through a game, she’s absolutely delivered on it.
Newburyport opened its season with a 2-1 win over Lynnfield on Wednesday afternoon, and Martyn was a major reason why. Not only did she find the back of the cage, but she also assisted on the team’s other goal scored by Sadie Aiello. The team’s two senior captains, Lottie O’Brien and Blaire Fox, had strong games, as did junior Meredith Boelke.
The Clippers will now get the weekend off before traveling to rival Pentucket on Monday.
Goich, Oreal power Port golf past Lynnfield
We’ve mentioned it many times before.
But for coach Michael Guthrie and the Newburyport golf team, they’ve firmly believed that they’ve had two No. 1 golfers over the past few years between Gavin Goich and Jack Oreal. A fact that was further driven home during Wednesday’s 181-156 victory over Lynnfield at Rowley Country Club.
Goich — a two-time Daily News All-Star — came home with 38 quota points, while Oreal — our back-to-back Daily News MVP — was right behind with 36 points. Then it also helps when you have the depth that the Clippers (3-0) do, as the trio of Sam Luekens, Tom Gagnon and Tucker Cowles each finished with 28 points.
Close loss for Triton field hockey
The chances were there to be taken.
But unfortunately for the Triton field hockey team during Wednesday’s opener, it couldn’t find the equalizing goal during a close 2-1 loss to Essex Tech. It was Julia LeTourneau scoring the goal for the Vikings off an assist from Molly Maynard, while goalie Molly Morris made six saves in the cage.
Kime finds back of cage in Amesbury opener
It was a tough ask for the Amesbury field hockey team.
During Wednesday’s season opener, the Redhawks had to make the trip over to face a solid Hamilton-Wenham program, and were on the wrong end of a 4-1 final. But there were certainly plenty of positives to take away from the setback, with Charlotte Kime scoring the goal off an assist from Sofia Le, and goalie Shelby Massey making 12 saves.
The Redhawks will now travel to Manchester Essex on Friday.
Gradual improvement for Triton volleyball
It’s a long season, and every step of the way is important.
So far across two games, the Triton volleyball team has dropped a pair of 3-0 matches, with the latest setback coming on Wednesday night against Danvers. But in a sign of gradual improvement, the set scores for the Vikings were much better against the Falcons (25-18, 25-10, 25-21).
Olivia Basile led the way with 7 assists, Emma D’Andrea finished with 4 kills and 2 blocks, and Charlotte Wilson came up with 4 digs.
