A great early-season story that we’ve highlighted has been the resurgence of the Triton field hockey program. With captains Ava Johnson and Delaney Quinn leading the group — along with talented athletes like Peighton Hertigan, Riley McDonald, Sophia Stanley, Maggie Rennick and Jersey Giordano — the Vikings once again look like a team that could finish near the top of the CAL and make a run in the playoffs.
And that all still holds true.
… But Newburyport just remains multiple levels ahead.
A red-hot Clippers team put their foot down against their rival on Monday afternoon, getting an excellent four-goal effort from senior captain Riley Lombard to cruise past the Vikings for the 7-1 victory. Ever since a season-opening loss at Lynnfield, the Clippers (7-1) have reeled off seven straight wins while outscoring their opponents 39-7.
Besides Lombard, fellow senior captain Olivia Wilson also led Newburyport with a goal and three assists on Monday. Lottie O’Brien and Sophie Johnson found the back of the cage as well, and Blaire Fox had an assist.
Triton (4-3-0) will now get a week off before hosting Essex Tech next Monday.
Three in a row for Triton golf!
Hillview Golf Course didn’t prove to be too much of a challenge for Triton.
The Vikings put together a great outing on Monday afternoon, rolling to their third straight win with a 180-166 victory over North Reading. Both Evan Allen and Jack Gagne carded 34 quota points for the winners, while teammate Wyatt Allen wasn’t too far behind with 32 points.
Triton (6-4) will now try to make it four in a row when it plays archrival and powerhouse Newburyport on Thursday.
Newburyport golf rolls past Essex Tech
Your weekly update of the average score the Newburyport golf team is putting up during each match: 183.4.
A ridiculous average that the Clippers improved on Monday at the easier Reedy Meadows Golf Course, rolling past host Essex Tech for the 210-190 victory. Out in front for the undefeated Clippers (8-0) was Gavin Goich with 38 quota points, while Jack Oreal carded 36.
Pentucket soccer falls to Lynnfield
Both Pentucket soccer teams are much improved this year, make no mistake.
But Lynnfield appears to just be on a different level.
The Pioneers swept the Panthers on the pitch on Monday, with the boys winning 5-1 while the girls completed a 2-0 shutout. The first MIAA power rankings for the fall season should be releasing soon, and expect to see both the Pioneer boys (5-1-2) and girls (5-2-0) rated highly.
Despite the result, captains Aiden Napolitano, Jayden Pabst and Jake LaCroix have the Pentucket boys (2-2-2) almost matching their win total from last season less than a month in. Meanwhile, captains Sofia Bellacqua, Kaitlin Borci, Regan Breen, Paige Rosario and Grace Sudbay have the Panther girls (2-5-1) already matching last year’s win total.
Newburyport volleyball swept at Lynnfield
It was three close sets, but the Newburyport volleyball team wasn’t able to take any one of them on Monday night.
Traveling up to rival Lynnfield, the Clippers ended up getting swept, 3-0, with set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 26-24. So far this year, the Pioneers (7-1) have only lost once — and in five sets — on the road at Reading, while in their seven victories, only Pentucket has managed to take a set off them.
Meanwhile for the Clippers (5-3), Gabby Vigeant had 9 kills, Ava Bailey had 7 kills and Brooke Lawton sent over 5 aces.
Another heartbreaker for Pentucket golf
It’s borderline starting to get cruel for the Pentucket golf team.
It wasn’t bad enough at the end of last week, when the Panthers suffered a nailbitting 157-155 loss to rival Triton. No, because in their next time out on Monday afternoon, the Panthers incredibly were on the wrong end of their second straight two-point loss after falling to Lynnfield, 156-154, at Sagamore Sping Golf Club.
Two-time Daily News All-Star and senior captain Noah Meyer led the way with 33 quota points, while Reece King added 29 and both Andrew Pfifferling and Logan Artus came home with 24.
Bub stops 11, but Pentucket shut out
The Pentucket field hockey team was shut out at home on Monday, falling to a strong visiting squad from Lynnfield, 6-0. Goalie Hannah Bub played well and made 11 saves for the Panthers (1-5-1), who will look to get back into the win column when they host Amesbury on Wednesday — weather permitting.
