SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — What a difference one night can make in for the Danville Dans.
After being held to just a single run in Thursday’s 2-1 loss to the Terre Haute Rex at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, the Dans exploded for 19 runs on 21 hits in a 19-4 thrashing of the Champion City Kings in the opening game of Friday’s doubleheader at Davidson Stadium. The second game was in progress when the Commercial-News went to press.
Left fielder Michael DiMartini fueled the Danville attack going 4-for-5 with solo homers in the second and third innings to go along with four runs scored and three RBIs.
Also going deep in Friday’s game was center fielder Aaron Downs, who led off the game with a solo home run to begin the offensive onslaught by the Dans.
Every starter in the Danville lineup had at least one hit, one run scored and one RBI in the victory. Other offensive stars included first baseman Gray Wells, who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and shortstop Sebastian Arguelles, who was 2-for-6 with three RBIs.
Stone Simmons, making his second start this summer for the Dans, tossed three shutout innings allowing three hits, while walking one and striking out five. Reliever Jake Murphy was credited with the victory after allowing a run in single inning of relief.
Champion City, which trailed 7-1 after four innings, had back-to-back-to-back homers from Quintin Reep, Lucas Day and Caden Miller in the fifth inning to pull within 7-4. But that was as close as they would get as the Dans scored 12 unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Thursday night in Terre Haute, Danville had nine hits but it could only manage one run in the loss to the Rex.
Terre Haute scored its runs in the second inning on a two-run home run by Carder Reich. Danville scored its only run in the sixth on a RBI single by Nolan Farley, but could not get any more against the Rex’s pitching staff, striking out seven times and leaving eight men on base.
Meade Johnson had seven strikeouts in five innings for the tough loss, while Mason Robinson had one strikeout in three innings.
Aaron Downs and Graham Mastros each had two hits for the Dans, who are now 15-12 with two days left in the Prospect League’s first half. Terre Haute improved to 12-13 overall with a 2-0 win over Lafayette on Friday night.
Danville can clinch the first-half title with two more wins as the Dans end the first half with games against the Johnstown Mill Rats tonight and Sunday.
