MOULTRIE — Plans are under way for a local celebration of America’s 250 birthday in Moultrie and Colquitt County with the formation of a committee consisting of representatives of organizations and agencies within the city and county.
At the recent Independence Day event, Moultrie Mayor Bill McIntosh and Colquitt County Administrator Chas Cannon signed a joint proclamation recognizing the committee and encouraging citizens to participate in the two-year celebration. The formation of the committee follows the lead of the America 250 Commission established by the U.S. Congress in 2016 and the Georgia US250 Committee established by Gov. Brian Kemp earlier this year.
The first official project of the Moultrie-Colquitt County America 250 Committee is a contest to design a logo for use by the committee for the next two years. The winning design should include the iconic Colquitt County Courthouse or its cupola, the words “Moultrie-Colquitt County America 250” and patriotic colors. More details about the contest can be found on the Facebook pages of the Moultrie Observer, the Chamber, Downtown Moultrie, the Arts Center and John Benning Chapter NSDAR or by emailing MCCAmerica250@gmail.com. The logo will be used on all events and activities sanctioned by the committee and on promotional items including t-shirts and caps.
Preliminary plans include patriotic musical and theatrical productions, essay and art contests in schools, displays with businesses, parades and many other events and activities.
The committee consists of representatives from the city, county, Arts Center, the Chamber, the school system, veterans groups, The Observer, ministerial group, the Y, parks and recreation, the library and DAR.
