Once again, the Newburyport girls lacrosse team is a state title favorite.
Despite losing a combined seven Daily News All-Stars to graduation over the last two years — which fueled the program to back-to-back Division 3 state title games (2023 champions) — the Clippers are still in position to make a run at a third straight appearance. With the release of the official MIAA brackets on Wednesday afternoon, the Clippers (13-5) have earned the No. 2 seed in this year’s tournament.
New faces, same results.
Leading the way is UMass Amherst commit Reese Bromby (78g, 7a), along with fellow seniors Avery Tahnk (38g, 7a) and Grace Chandler. But for a young Newburyport team, which will host either No. 34 Saint Bernard’s or No. 31 Shawsheen Valley in the first round (time/date TBD), it’s received excellent contributions from Amelia Price (23g, 25a), Amanda Linteris (36g, 7a), Blaire Fox (14g, 7a) and goalie Cody Saboliauskas.
Then moving down to Division 4, both Pentucket and Triton made the field.
Thanks to ending their regular season on a five-game winning streak, the Panthers (15-5) jumped up to No. 7 and will potentially get to have two home playoff games. It’s already been a strong year for Ella Palmer (62g, 17a), Kate Conover (40g, 31), Cat Colvin (39g, 24a), Sydney Trout (28g, 31a), Kat Flaherty and the Panthers, who will host No. 26 Stoneham in the first round at a time and date not yet announced.
Meanwhile for a young Triton (3-15) team with only one senior on the roster, winning three of its last six games was enough to get it into the playoffs as the last team in at No. 32. Olivia O’Leary (27g, 4a), Riley McDonald (20g, 5a), Carolyn Silva (18g) and the Vikings will host No. 33 Hoosac Valley in the preliminary round (time/date TBD).
