GIRLS TENNIS
Manchester Essex 5, Rockport 0: The Hornets (2-2) climbed back to .500 with the sweep, getting singles wins from Aurora Lenehan (6-0, 6-0), Sarah Cort (6-0, 6-0) and Grace Scarbrough (6-0, 6-0) to lead the charge. The doubles teams of Nina Zalosh/Maeve McCardle (6-2, 6-1) and Libby Lawler/Ella Arntsen (6-4, 6-1) also came out on top. For Rockport, Hannah Aspesi played her first singles match at No. 3 in the absence of Mariana DeBenedictis. Vikings’ head coach Stacey Twombly was pleased with her doubles team’s efforts.
Danvers 5, Gloucester 0: The Fishermen (2-2) weren’t quite able to keep pace with a hard hitting Falcons’ squad on Monday afternoon.
BOYS TENNIS
Manchester Essex 5, Rockport 0: The Hornets (5-0) made some lineup tweaks in Monday’s match, with Alex Montaresi taking over the No. 1 singles slot and securing a 6-0, 6-0 win and Charlie Langendorf bumping up a slot as well to win 6-0, 6-0 at second singles. Sammy Bothwell got the nod at third singles and won 6-2, 1-0 before his opponent retired due to injury. In doubles action, Shay Engelhardt and Charlie Rubens teamed up for a 6-3, 6-1 win while Ernest Taylor and Andrew Cahill won 6-1, 6-0. Manchester returns to the court on Wednesday at Amesbury (4 p.m.).
Masconomet 5, Gloucester 0: In Monday’s NEC matchup, the Fishermen’s first doubles tandem of Noah Poulin and Ethan Parisi battled hard in a competitive 7-5, 3-6, 3-6 defeat. Shane Widtfeldt, a freshman, saved eight match points before losing 3-6, 6-7 (11-13) at first singles, while Julian Nixon took six games off his opponent at third singles in a tight two-set match.
BOYS LACROSSE
Manchester Essex 9, Lynnfield 7: The Hornets (4-0) remained unbeaten behind two goals apiece from Charlie Thurlow, Walker Valeo and Turner Valeo. Jack McCavanagh added a goal and an assist while Carson Croft and Luke Renzi each scored once. Aaron Crompton drew the start in net and made 13 saves in the win. Manchester will look to keep the ball rolling on Thursday when it hosts Triton for a 4 p.m. start.
Swampscott 12, Gloucester 2: The Fishermen struggled to get their offense going in Monday’s setback, which put them at 1-3 on the young season. Next up is a home clash with Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon (4:30 p.m.).
GIRLS LACROSSE
Manchester Essex 12, Lynnfield 6: The Hornets (4-3) got back in the win column with the convincing CAL decision. Sarah Broadbent, Laila Mears, Sylvie McCavanagh, Stella Lage, Charlotte Crocker and Abby Kent all had first half goals to get their team off on a strong start and cruise to the finish line. Manchester travels to Triton on Thursday afternoon (4 p.m.).
Swampscott 16, Gloucester 1: The Fishermen fell short against their NEC foes despite strong games from Julia Palk — “she stepped up and had a great game at midfield,” said coach Liz Luster — and Natasha Depaula, who “stepped up as a leader on defense and played hard the entire game.” Gloucester (now 0-5) will look to find the win column at Winthrop on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
BASEBALL
Triton 3, Rockport 0: Josiah Whitley, Warren Adams and Pat Reardon all had hits for the Vikings (now 1-3), but it wasn’t enough to muster up any runs in the CAL setback. Ben Sperry drew the start on the mound, allowing three earned on four hits while striking out two. Adams tossed two hitless innings with three Ks to close things out. On another positive note, Rockport made zero errors in the narrow defeat and will look to get back in the win column on Thursday at home against Pentucket (4 p.m.).
SOFTBALL
Gloucester 12, Winthrop 0: The Fishermen continued to impress, improving to 6-0 on the year with Monday’s convincing win. Freshman Angela Russo drew the start in the circle, picking up six strikeouts to snag her first win of the season. Offensively, Ava Paone went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Tasara Frontiero was also 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gloucester takes on Swampscott at home on Wednesday (4:30) in an attempt to keep their undefeated season alive.
Triton 26, Rockport 0: Kaity D’Annolfo had the lone hit for the Vikings, which dipped to 0-5 with Monday’s loss. Rockport takes on Pentucket on the road on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
