TO THE EDITOR: As an earth science teacher, I have always emphasized environmental stewardship to my students. I am deeply concerned that President Donald Trump’s policies threaten the environment and public safety. His proposed elimination of the National Weather Service would not only cost dedicated scientists their jobs but also jeopardize accurate weather forecasting that protects lives.
We now know that Exxon Mobil’s own research accurately predicted global warming decades ago, yet the company spent millions on climate denial campaigns to protect its profits, delaying meaningful action. This deliberate misinformation has hindered our progress on climate change.
The recent devastating flash floods in Texas highlight the dangers we face. Had the National Weather Service been fully staffed and prepared, the loss of life may have been reduced. These disasters will only become more frequent and severe if we do not act.
Our planet’s future is at risk under current policies. I urge you to consider the facts and get involved. We should not leave critical decisions about our environment and safety solely to political leaders in Washington — your voice and actions matter.
