CLINTONVILLE — The Plattsburgh Hornets swarmed the AuSable Valley Patriots on both ends of the field to secure their first win of the season 36-0 Saturday.
The win comes after the Hornets’ 6-34 loss against Granville/Whitehall high school in the season opener.
“I liked how our players bounced back from last week, and we showed up.” said Justin Hart, Plattsburgh head football coach. “They gave it their all tonight.”
The Hornets struck as a team, controlling possession of the ball for a majority of the match while also sticking hard to the Patriots. The Hornets recorded two sacks —one each for Braeden Calkins and Troy Bushey— and forced several turnovers through fumbles and interceptions to keep AVCS off the scoreboard all night.
PHS won convincingly, maintaining their strong play throughout all four quarters. The team scored at least one touchdown in every quarter of the match.
Senior quarterback Daniel Hartmann was the engine of the offense, completing 15 of his 24 pass attempts for 235 yards. He threw four TD passes, and ran in a fifth. He also got busy on the defensive end, grabbing an interception and giving the Hornets an additional 26 yards.
Senior receiver Dominic Deangelo was the main weapon for the Hornets, amassing 142 receiving yards on seven receptions. He caught two touchdown passes, including a 54 yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Senior receiver Braeden Calkins was efficient as well, recording 69 yards on four receptions for the Hornets, including a touchdown.
Senior running back Landon LaDue was reliable as a rushing threat, earning PHS 81 yards on 15 carries.
Senior receiver Julian Brooks caught a touchdown pass in the second quarter and senior Bryan Kemokai scored the final points of the game when he grabbed an interception and returned it for a touchdown with five minutes left on the game clock.
AVCS’ junior quarterback Aiden Blaise recorded 64 yards on 7-21 passing.
The Patriots were limited by a strong Hornets defense. The top receiver for the Patriots was junior Hayden Goyette, who totalled 28 yards on two completions.
The Hornets celebrated their win in the endzone after the game, screaming and cheering for themselves as they lined up to take photos and celebrate as the stands emptied. It was a much different look then the end of last week’s game. Plattsburgh was able to celebrate just as they played, as a team.
“The D-line really stepped up, and our seniors did a great job,” Hart said. “The entire team did a great job.”
Plattsburgh now stands 1-1 overall and will host Peru under the lights, Friday at 7:30 p.m. AuSable Valley, 0-2, hits the road to face Saranac Lake, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
