Basically everyone on the Newburyport girls basketball team remembers what happened a year ago.
… On their own court, no less.
Last winter, the Clippers entered their annual game against Georgetown having won it an impressive 12 years in a row. It was one of those contests that had “foregone conclusion” written all over it at tipoff. But thanks to a combined 38 points from the Marcelin sisters, Tyrah and Neiylah, the Royals traveled over to High Street and walked away with a shocking 62-57 victory.
For the returning Newburyport athletes this winter, they’ve been waiting a year to pay that back.
That moment finally arrived on Monday night, and Olivia Foley wasn’t going to allow Newburyport to let its chance for revenge slip away. The senior captain dropped a game-high 19 points, and the Clippers held on late for the win over Georgetown, 53-47. The trio of Laney Schwab, Clara Thompson and Ava Bailey all chipped in 8 points for the Clippers (6-4), who were ranked No. 25 in the latest Division 3 power poll that came out Tuesday morning.
For Georgetown (6-5), Talya Mariani hit a 3 and finished with a team-high 16 points, and both Katie Davies and Victoria Barbarick were in double figures with 11 points. The Royals are currently in a fight to earn a home playoff game, sitting at No. 15 in the Division 4 rankings.
PENTUCKET: Foley, girls make quick work of Ipswich
It didn’t take long for this one to get out of hand.
The Pentucket girls raced out of the gate, and cruised to a blowout win over Ipswich, 57-8 on Monday afternoon. Leading the way offensively was Amelia Crowe with 14 points, and Carly Foley had a nice game chipping in a season-high 9 points.
It’s now seven wins in a row for the Panthers (9-2), who came in at No. 9 in Tuesday’s latest Division 3 power poll that was released.
AMESBURY: Boys and girls both drop close games
The Amesbury girls would like this one back.
Monday afternoon was a great opportunity to pick up a quality win over a solid Lynnfield team, and for the first three quarters, the Redhawks were in position to do just that. But the Pioneers made more clutch plays down the stretch, and were able to pick up the road win over the Redhawks, 45-34.
For Amesbury (6-6), freshman Olivia McKay had a team-high 16 points, and senior captain Ellie Marden hit three 3s and finished with 10 points.
For the boys, Amesbury was always kept at an arms-length away.
It seemed like Lynnfield maintained a 7-to-12-point lead for the majority of the second half, as the Redhawks dropped their third in a row with a loss to the Pioneers, 54-44. Parker DeLong had a game-high 14 points for the Redhawks, Justin Dube was also in double figures with 10 points, and both Trey Sullivan and Connor Mazzaglia finished with 9 points.
Amesbury (4-7) will look to stop its skid when it hosts Ipswich on Friday.
TRITON: Girls go cold against Manchester Essex
The shots just weren’t falling for the Triton girls on Monday night, and visiting Manchester Essex was able to take advantage to walk away with a 47-35 victory. Margaret Welch hit a 3 and led the Vikings (4-7) with 11 points, and Lily D’Andrea chipped in 9 points.
