SATURDAY RESULTS GIRLS SOCCER
Franklin 7, Sharon Springs 0
Franklin junior Shannon Kingsbury scored five goals to become the leading scorer in Section IV girls soccer history and lead her No. 4 seeded Purple Devils to a Section IV Class D quarterfinal win Saturday, Oct. 25, over No. 5 seed Sharon Springs.
Kingsbury moved ahead of Lansing’s Rachael Palladino, a 2009 graduate, with her 4th of the day and finished the game with 190 career goals She also set the school’s mark for career assists, with 38, which broke the FCS individual career assist record that was held by Kayla Campbell, who graduated in 2022.
FCS opened the scoring 9:15 into the game when Ivana Svecharnick finished off a rebound on the backside of a Franklin counter attack. Peyton Woodard made it 2-0 when she steered in a Kingsbury pass to the back post.
Kingsbury got her first goal off an assist by Zaeda Beadle with 18:50 left in the first half. She would score three more in a 10 minute span.
The career goals record score came with 8:41 left in the half, when Kara Clarke’s pass sent Kingsbury in on the Sharon goal.
Franklin set the final score with 4:14 into the second half when Svecharnik’s pass set Kingsbury up for a breakaway goal.
Ava Jump had five saves for Sharon Springs (11-5-1).
Daniella DeSilva had six saves for Franklin (13-3), which plays top seeded Richfield Springs/Owen D. Young in the semifinals Wednesday, Oct. 29.
RS/ODY defeated Franklin 4-0 earlier on Sept. 9.
Edmeston/Morris 2, South Kortright/Andes 2, E/M advances on PKs, 5-3
Sophie Robinson, Elle Nichols, Kenna Buriello, Chelsey Clegg and Gabby Cotten all made their penalty kicks and McKenzie Thall stopped two PKs in goal as No. 3 seed Edmeston/Morris advanced in the Section IV Class D quarterfinals after a tie with No. 6 seed South Kortright/Andes on Saturday in Edmeston.
Nicols and Kendall Gould scored for E/M, which got an assist from Sophie Robinson.
Nora Trimbell and Madysen Reeves scored for SK/A, which got an assist from Jaylee Kelley.
Reeves, Kelley and Alexis Hendrickson made penalty kicks.
Kennedy Quarino had nine saves for South Kortright/Andes (9-3-2).
Thall had 11 saves for Edmeston/Morris (10-5-1), which will play at No. 2 seed Charlotte Valley/Schenevus in a semifinal Wednesday.
Bainbridge-Guilford 3, Oxford 1
Victoria Suda scored twice as third seeded B-B topped visiting Oxford, the six seed, in a Section IV Class C quarterfinal Saturday in Bainbridge.
Keelan Ammon also scored for B-G, which got two assists from Jayslin Henderson and an assist from Breanna Casey.
Jayne Fleury scored for Oxford (11-5-1).
Danica Park made 16 saves for Bainbridge-Guilford (15-1), which is at No. 2 seed Notre Dame (9-2), for a semifinal match Wednesday in Elmira.
Sidney 4, Lansing 0
Nayla Miley got her sixth hat trick of the season as No. 4 seed Sidney shut out visiting Lansing, the No. 5 seed, in the Section IV Class B quarterfinals Saturday in Sidney.
Miley got her first goal 35 seconds into the game and netted the final score with 1:35 left in the game.
Chloe van der Sommen also scored and had an assist. Kaden O’Hara and Addison Benedict also had assists.
Lansing outshot Sidney, 17-14, but trailed in corner kicks, 4-1.
Nadia Whyte made eight saves for Lansing.
Trinity Lowe had 16 saves for Sidney (10-4), which plays in the semifinals at top seeded Chenango Forks at 7p.m., Wednesday.
Richfield Springs/ODY 4, Milford 0
Issy Seamon had a hat trick as top seeded Richfield Springs/Owen D. Young won a Section IV Class D quarterfinal match Saturday in Richfield over No. 8 seed Milford.
Sydney Marshall had a goal and an assist and Abby Hosford had an assist for Richfield Springs/Owen D. Young (14-2), which hosts No. 4 Franklin for a semifinal match Wednesday.
Charlotte Valley/Schenevus 5, Margaretville 1
Jordan Odell had a goal and an assist as No. 2 seed Charlotte Valley/Schenevus beat No. 7 Margaretville in a Section IV Class D quarterfinal Saturday in Schenevus.
Hayden Marino, Annie Gallagher and Sophia Camilleri also scored for CV/S, which for assists from Brinlee Wright and Carleigh Reed.
Livia Fronckowiak scored for Margaretville (7-10).
Charlotte Valley/Schenevus (12-2-3) hosts No. 3 seed Edmeston/Morris in a semifinal Wednesday.
Tully 5, Cooperstown 0
Top seeded Tully advanced to the Section III Class C semifinals with a 5-0 win over No. 9 seed Cooperstown in a quarterfinal match Saturday in Tully.
Cooperstown ends the season at 8-9-1.
VOLLEYBALL
Oneonta 3, Cobleskill 0
Lily Bridger had six kills as Oneonta got a non-conference win over visiting Cobleskill, 25-11, 25-12, 25-19, on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Kylie Carr had three blocks, Abby Belanger had three digs and six aces and Aubry Microni made nine assists.
Oneonta (12-2) will host Chenango Forks for a match Tuesday, Oct. 28.
FOOTBALL
Cooperstown 34, New York Mills 20
Senior Brenin Dempsey ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more as Cooperstown won a South/East Division game Saturday, Oct. 24, at Paul Lambert Field.
The Marauders controlled the first quarter and took a 12-0 lead on two touchdowns by Santino DiOrio, one rushing and one on a fourth-and-goal pass from the five-yard line. In between the two touchdowns, Mills made a successful on-side kick.
However, from their second possession, the Hawkeye offense began to pick up momentum. With 5:54 left in the half, Dempsey scored on a 10-yard quarterback sneak. The point after missed, so Mills led, 12-6.
A one yard Dempsey run just before halftime, pared with an extra point by senior Ryan Ford, gave Cooperstown the lead, 13-12.
The second half was dominated by the Hawkeyes. In the third quarter, Dempsey threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Matthew Duszynski and also ran for a 14-yard touchdown. With two more extra points, the Hawkeyes led after three quarters, 27-12.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Dempsey found Thomas Hellenthal on a 25-yard corner fade for the final Cooperstown score. Ford’s extra point made it 34-12.
Brandon Palmer caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Richard Zalocha with about three minutes left in the game for the final score for New York Mills (1-7).
Cooperstown (4-4) is a No. 7 seed in the playoffs and will play at No. 2 seed Morrisville-Eaton (6-2), the North/West Division champ, at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30.
Delaware Academy 41, Deposit/Hancock 6
Adam Cook rushed for 151 yards and Lucas Nealis threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as host Delaware Academy topped Deposit/Hancock in a Division VI Class D football game Friday at Dave Kelly Field in Delhi.
The game was scoreless until the second quarter, when the Bulldogs scored on two long pass plays. Saverio Prisco scored on a 38-yard pass play for the first score. Cook then scored on a 55-yard pass play. Nealis made both extra points for a 14-0 halftime score.
Cook scored on an eight-yard run to open the third quarter and make it 21-0.
D/H scored on a pass from Noah Bass to Greyson Thomas, but could only make it 21-6.
In the fourth quarter, Nealis threw a 33-yard scoring pass to John Wilson and ran in a nine-yard touchdown. Jack Mokey rushed for final touchdown, from 12-yards out. Nealis made two of the three conversions.
Nealis was 8-for-11 for 151 yards. He also made an interception on defense.
Cook had 15 rushes for 199 yards. At middle linebacker, he also made 10 tackles.
Delaware Academy (6-2, 4-0) closes the regular season with a division game at Afton/Harpursville at 1:30 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY
CSC championship
Cooperstown’s boys successfully defended their undefeated record in Division 2 in the league by taking the division championship Saturday in Sauquoit.
Jacob Johnson (seventh) and Owen Capozza Flannigan (13th) earned all-star status, as did three Cooperstown varsity girls, Evelyn Rhodes (second), Courtney McCarthy (sixth) and Olivia Temp (17th).
Cooperstown’s girls team ran incomplete for the first time this season, due to illness. Clinton’s girls won the Division 1 championship with 28 points; Adirondack also scored 28 points, but lost in displacement as Clinton’s sixth runner finished ahead of Adirondack’s sixth. Individually, Adirondack’s Cora Hinsdill finished first in 21:22, followed quickly by Cooperstown’s Evelyn Rhodes in 21:32. Courtney McCarthy finished sixth overall (22:46) in a field of 68 runners. Olivia Temp clocked 24:42. Maggie Heavner finished in 31st (27:01).
The varsity boys competed in a field of 118 runners and tallied a fourth-place finish out of 13 complete teams with 116 points. Clinton (D1) finished first overall with 83 points followed by Remsen (D3), 97 points, and Canastota (D1), 115 points. Waterville’s Danny Casatelli finished first overall in 17:41. Jacob Johnson (7th, 19:37) led the Cooperstown squad. Owen Capozza Flannigan was Cooperstown’s second runner (13th, 20:26). Brendan Heavner finished 33rd (21:58) followed by Wyatt Capozza Flannigan (38th, 22:15). Hu Agostino rounded out the scoring five in 41st overall (22:24). Elias MacLeish and George Riesenfeld were the team’s sixth and seventh runners (54th, 23:16; and 71st, 24:31). Ryan Norwood and Taylor Kepner finished back-to-back in 86th (27:05) and 87th (27:12). Theo Feury was 96th (28:30).
Cooperstown will race in the Section III Championships and State Qualifier on Nov. 8, at Mount Markham.
FRIDAY RESULTS
Ithaca 3, Oneonta 0
Aubry Microni made two blocks 10 assists and 10 digs but host Ithaca, the West Division champion, swept Oneonta, the East Division champ, in the semifinals of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference playoffs, 25-9, 25-14, 28-18, on Friday, Oct. 23.
Julie Ferreira-Reyes had two aces and Kylie Carr made five kills for the Yellowjackets.
