A Crossville couple and their young son are the newest homebuyers to partner with Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity. The home is Habitat’s 81st since its inception in 1996.
Zach and Ashlyn Anderson, with son Sawyer, were surrounded by friends, family, volunteers, and community partners on Tuesday, Oct. 22, for the dedication ceremony in their new living room.
Jeff Woods Construction donated labor and materials for a durable 50-year roof, ensuring the longevity and security of the family’s new home.
Support extended far beyond construction material. Various community leaders — including Faith Worship Center, Council of Catholic Women of St. Francis of Assisi, Lowe’s, and Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church Piece Corps — rallied behind the Andersons by providing essential supplies for their new home.
The Andersons’ journey to homeownership was mentored by Habitat volunteers Ken and Nancy Schrader, and Ellen Winters. Nancy Schrader was on hand to congratulate them on their achievement and present the keys to their new home.
Those who qualify for Habitat’s affordable homeownership program contribute sweat equity hours and work alongside volunteers as they build their own homes.
Sweat equity hours are acquired through a homeownership education program and volunteer work. Even children can contribute by getting good grades.
Once home construction is complete, program participants then purchase their home and pay an affordable mortgage. The self-empowerment created by this opportunity helps homeowner families eliminate barriers to a better, healthier, more financially stable life.
Habitat for Humanity is currently accepting applications for the 2024-25 build season.
