SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Matthew Jaeger hit a game-winning 34-yard field goal in the closing seconds to give the Minnesota State football team a 20-19 victory over Augustana in opening round of the national tournament Saturday.
MSU fell to the Vikings 34-16 in the regular season.
Trailing 19-10 late in the fourth quarter, MSU quarterback Hayden Ekern hit Grant Guyett for a 33-yard touchdown with 1:35 to play. Jaeger’s extra point cut the MSU deficit to 19-17.
The Mavericks then recovered Jaeger’s onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and then drove 35 yards to set up the game-winning field goal.
The Mavericks (9-3) will continue play in the national tournament Saturday.
