SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Frankfort clinched a ticket to Charleston and the state tournament, winning the Class AAA, Region II championship over Lincoln with an 8-0 win on Tuesday.
Tayler Likens hit a solo shot to center in the bottom of the third for the Falcons (27-0).
She led Frankfort going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Avery Noel threw five shutout frames, allowing three hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
In Monday’s opener, Likens and Noel both belted home runs, and Rylee Mangold and Noel combined for another 8-0 victory.
Likens (Kent State signee) gave the Falcons their first lead with a solo home run in the third inning, and singles by Mangold (Concord signee) and Claire Westfall made it 3-0 later in the inning.
An error scored another run in the fourth, and Noel (Liberty signee) broke the game open with a two-run shot later in the frame.
Likens, who also doubled, and Westfall both had two hits, and Likens and Noel each had two RBIs.
Mangold earned the win in the circle, spinning four shutout innings of three-hit ball with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Noel tossed the final two scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and fanning a pair.
Sadie Jones took the loss for Lincoln. Brogan Sampson doubled.
Petersburg sweeps Doddridge County
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Petersburg clinched a trip to Charleston for the eighth consecutive season, sweeping the Class AA, Region II championships series with an 8-2 win over Doddridge County on Tuesday.
Ella Markwell and Miley Tingler hit home runs for the Vikings (21-10).
Markwell’s was a two-run shot in the sixth while Tingler’s was a two-run blast in the third.
Gracie Carpenter, Kinsley Crites and Olivia Kimble combined to allow seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
Brooke DeHaven went deep for a two-run home run for the Bulldogs in the first inning to open the scoring.
In Monday’s 9-5 series opening win, Petersburg’s lead swelled from 4-2 entering the sixth to 9-2.
Those runs came in handy as Doddridge got a run back in the sixth and scored twice in the seventh.
Ella Chew (Potomac State) went 3 for 4 with a double and scored twice to lead the Petersburg offense. Abi Nettles had two hits and scored two times, and Shyane Tawney tallied two ribbies.
Markwell and Quenlynn Cole also doubled.
Olivia Kimble earned the win in the circle allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts to two walks in seven frames of work.
DeHaven went 2 for 3 with a home run for Doddridge County. Tessa Mayle was the losing pticher.
