LONDONDERRY — Firefighters rescued the occupant of a car that was found partially submerged in Beaver Brook at the Windham/Londonderry town line Friday night.
The Londonderry Fire Department received a call at 8:49 p.m. about a vehicle that had left the road and was in the swiftly moving Beaver Brook, according to Londonderry Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Anderson.
Authorities from both Londonderry and Windham were on the scene.
Upon arrival firefighters confirmed that a person was still inside the vehicle.
Rescuers attached a winch cable to the car to secure it, while first responders waded into the cold water wearing survival suits to rescue the occupant.
“They extricated the patient, put on a flotation device and secured the patient with ropes,” said Anderson.
The occupant, whose name and condition have not been released, was taken to the Elliot Hospital in Manchester.
Due to the potential environmental effects of the incident the Department of Environmental Services was also contacted.
Anderson, who was not there but had spoken to firefighters who were, said the operation was difficult but went well.
“It’s a very high-risk event,” he said. “It’s not something we do often.”
