A fire severely damaged a mobile home in southern Effingham Wednesday evening. There were no injuries, according to the Effingham Fire Department.
The Effingham Fire Department received a call regarding a fire at 34 Four Seasons Estates Mobile Park at 5:17 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters contained the fire to the area of the bedroom where the fire originated, but some other parts of the home were also damaged by smoke, soot and water.
“There were three people living there. Only one was home. The other two were at work,” Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said Thursday. “Most of the damage was on the northwest bedroom area of the mobile home.”
Two cats were also in the home at the time of the fire, but first responders managed to rescue them. Kulesza said one cat was given oxygen and noted that both cats are still alive.
“They have both been sent to Pet Wellness, the veterinary clinic, and they’re both recovering,” he said regarding the Pet Wellness Center of Southern Illinois.
The cause of the fire is still being determined, but Kulesza said there is nothing suspicious about it.
“We do know that it started on the north side of the bedroom around an air conditioner window unit and an electrical box,” he said.
While responding to the scene of the fire Wednesday, the Effingham Fire Department received assistance from the Teutopolis Fire Protection District, Altamont Fire Protection District, Effingham Police Department, Effingham Police Dispatch, Effingham County Animal Control and Ameren.
