The Fantastic Quilt Guild of Fairfield Glade Quilts of Valor Chapter presented a Quilt of Valor to David Finnel at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fairfield Glade on Nov. 3.
Presenting it were Janice Cahill, Susanna Bour and Barb Patterson.
Finnel enlisted into the U.S. Navy Sept. 2, 1964, and did his basic training at the Great Lakes Training Center.
After basic training, he was assigned to the USS Bushnell [AS-15], a submarine tender, as a firefighter.
He continued his training as a hull technician, learning brazing and ultrasonic welding. After spending two years on the USS Bushnell, he was promoted to third class petty officer [E-4].
Finnel transitioned into the U.S. Naval Reserve and returned to his hometown of Green Bay, WI, where he served for 23 more years. On Jan. 1, 1989, he retired as a first class petty officer with a career of 25 years.
“Serving my country was an honor,” Finnel said.
