SALEM — Julia Csekö, Salem’s Artist-in-Residence, hosted an opening reception at Old Town Hall Saturday for her exhibition “Social Fabric,” a textile work engaging with the migration stories she collected from more than 80 local residents last year.
The exhibit is the culmination of the Brazilian American visual artist’s eight-month public artist in residency program that began in May with the participatory public art installation, “Transcending Borders — Immigrant Experiences and Dreams.”
The installation features more than 2,000 brightly colored ribbons with the phrase “you are welcome here” printed in several languages, as well as a QR code participants could scan to answer interview questions and share their stories of immigration.
